August 18 the cultural program will be framed by a recital by pianist Viktor Paukštelis in the memorial museum of writer Thomos Mann in Nida.

Built in 1874, the Nida lighthouse was an important navigational object of the Curonian Spit. It was needed in order to increase the safety of shipping in the Baltic Sea, especially due to difficult navigation conditions and frequent fogs. To build a stable structure almost 30 m high on the hill of Urbas, an impressive dune that was built in the 19th century. at the end it was just starting to be greened, it was a challenge. This was solved by placing a solid foundation – blocks of crushed stone – at a depth of 3 m.

The towering red brick octagonal lighthouse was a favorite of local residents and guests, and in the interwar period it even acquired a name: audiences from Germany and East Prussia called it Red Christopher. The structure was destroyed at the end of World War II as a strategic object. The current lighthouse is its “descendant”, built after the war.

The lighthouse days are organized by Neringa museums, Thomos Mann cultural center, Neringa municipality, Nida culture and tourism information center “Agila”, VšĮ “Šviesos ministerija”.
