The disease spread as early as the 18th century and, according to the charity, is «Malteser International», one of the last remaining plagues of modern times. For a long time it was believed that the polluted atmosphere spread the disease in some areas. Hence the name malaria, which means “bad air” in Italian. However, it was found in the 19th century that the pathogen is spread through the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito.
