In Mitte there is the ice cream trend from Hawaii

If following reading this article you are looking for “shaveiceberlin” in James-Simon-Park – look for a long line.

“This year an incredible number of guests are coming – even from other cities, they’ve seen us on Tiktok or Instagram,” says Jonas Müller (27), who founded “shaveiceberlin” with Ingo Schällig (24).

Ingo knew shave ice from his vacation in Hawaii – and mightn’t find any in Berlin. What is that exactly?

“A scoop of vegan ice cream goes into the bowl at the bottom, ice cream is scraped off a block, formed into a ball and poured with colorful home-made syrups in different flavors.” There are variants such as “Rainbow”, “Sunset”, “Hawaian” or “Tropical” for EUR 5.90 each.

Spoon instead of drink: For adults, there are versions with alcohol per mille, such as Strawberry Daiquiri (8.90 euros or Pina Colada (8.90 euros).

Incidentally, shaved ice is also found in other cultures: the Japanese call it Kakigori (e.g. at Tenzan Lab in Prenzlauer Berg) but it is also a refreshing dessert in China (e.g. at Liu Chengdu Weidao in Mitte).

At the moment the guys only have one booth – but it’s going so well that they’re considering expanding.

Mon.-Fri. 1pm-8pm. Sat./Sun. 12-9 p.m., James-Simon-Park, Stadtbahnbogen 159/160, Mitte. www.shaveiceberlin.de
