According to information from the Ministry of Culture, Zheng Wanjing was born in Miaoli in 1927 during the Japanese era. He graduated from Miaoli No. 1 Public School (today’s Jiangong Elementary School in Miaoli City) in 1941 and was admitted to the 5th phase of the Taipei Railway Works Technician Trainee Training Center in 1944. After graduating from the Taipei Railway Works Technician Apprenticeship Training Center, he entered the boiler attachment class of the organized work (workshop) and successively participated in the maintenance of steam locomotives and diesel-electric locomotives. He has a solid technical foundation. He later held management positions in the material group and work group, and was eventually promoted to deputy director. He retired as deputy director of the Taipei Machinery Factory in 1992.
After Zheng Wanjing retired, he returned to the North Factory in 1997 to participate in the CK101 steam locomotive restoration project. He served as the general consultant of the “CK101 Steam Locomotive Resumption Project” and spent 7 months restoring the CK101 steam locomotive that had been retired for many years. The completion of the restoration has opened a new page for the dynamic resumption of operation of the Taiwan Railways steam locomotives, and continues to teach future generations the restoration techniques.
During his 50-year career as a railway employee, he spent more than four-fifths of his time at the Taipei Locomotive Factory, witnessing the most glorious era of the locomotive factory. The Taipei Locomotive Factory has been designated as a national historic site. After the Ministry of Culture promoted the plan to transform into a railway museum park, whether it was research projects, oral history interviews, exhibitions and factory celebrations, Zheng Wanching enthusiastically participated and provided assistance, generously providing precious personal collections and oral materials.
The Ministry of Culture pointed out that the National Railway Museum Preparatory Office has displayed Zheng Wanching’s precious personal collection items in an on-site exhibition in the Deputy Director’s Office in the exhibition area of the park’s main office.
