Count Paul Buysse died at the age of 78, writes Het Laatste Nieuws on Sunday. The Antwerp businessman had been “seriously ill” for a year, his entourage told the Flemish daily. He died at his home.

Count Paul Buysse was an important figure in the post-war Belgian economy. He made his reputation as director of the British company Vickers (Rolls-Royce) and the Belgian company Bekaert. He was also a confidant of the Belgian royal family and King Philippe.

He was the father of five children.

The Federation of Belgian Businesses (FEB) reacted with great sadness to the announcement of the count’s death. She welcomed a particularly valued member of the strategic committee of the employers’ organization, with many years of experience both at international and national level.

“Paul was a true ‘captain of industry’, with his keen views and ability to always keep the big picture in mind,” commented Pieter Timmermans, Managing Director of the FEB. “He helped the FEB to stay on course. He always encouraged me to carefully analyze international developments and to include them in the development of the Belgian entrepreneurship strategy. His dynamism and his passion for entrepreneurship will be missed,” he continued. “On behalf of the FEB, I wish his family lots of strength to cope with this loss.”
