The former president of the Friborg Council of State Augustin Macheret died on Friday at the age of 85. Rector of the University of Fribourg, he joined the executive in 1992, serving as head of the Department of Public Education and Cultural Affairs until the end of 2001.

Elected PDC, today Le Center, Augustin Macheret was domiciled in Praroman-Le Mouret, according to the death notice published Saturday in La Liberté and La Gruyère. A member of the Grand Council in 1981, he was elected to the Council of State at the end of 1991, a government over which he presided in 1994 and 1998, the year he met Fidel Castro on a visit to Gruyères.

Augustin Macheret was born in 1938 in Vuippens. State Councilor, the lawyer by training has carried out numerous projects, including the law on the University as well as the extension of the cantonal diploma school and the creation of the university complex on the Pérolles plateau, recalls the daily Freedom.

In terms of culture, Augustin Macheret launched the Espace Jean Tinguely-Niki de Saint Phalle Foundation and the eponymous museum in 1997. In 2000, his efforts were rewarded with the creation of the Vallon Archaeological Museum. The former minister and rector of the University of Friborg was married and the father of a boy and a girl.

Holder of a Latin-Greek baccalaureate at the Collège Saint-Michel, then a law degree, Augustin Macheret began his career as a lawyer at the Federal Foreigners’ Office, while obtaining a doctorate. He was full professor of public law and public international law from 1973 at the University of Fribourg.
