The torrential rains that hit the Kii Peninsula on September 4, 2011 caused a series of river floods and landslides due to the typhoon, resulting in a total of 88 deaths and missing persons in Wakayama, Nara, and Mie prefectures. On the 4th of 2012, in Nachikatsuura Town, Wakayama Prefecture, where the most 29 people died, bereaved families and local residents gathered at the memorial monument around 1:00 am when the disaster occurred.
In front of the memorial, 29 LED lights, the same number as the number of victims, were lit, and the bereaved families quietly put their hands together and offered prayers to the victims.
Michio Iwabuchi, representative of the group of bereaved families who lost their father and nephew, said, “I wonder what kind of an adult my nephew would have become if he had lived. On September 4th, I hope many people will remember this flood. I want everyone to have an awareness of disaster prevention.”
Kotaro Kusumoto (20), who lost his childhood friend, said, “If it hadn’t been for the disaster, we would still be able to meet and talk. Today, I wanted to show my 20-year-old face, so I came to join hands. I was talking.
