Organizers also say there has been a high response from residents this year. It is not known how many people were involved in the cleanup.
But it is reported that this year they removed garbage, did landscaping and raked out basements.
In the lap of nature, the participants of the action found tires, furniture, building materials, and various household items, including pieces of iron, tires and bottles.
During the cleaning of basements in Riga, a huge artistic canvas was found, regarding 40 claw TVs and a bar installed by someone at an unspecified time. The bar was found in the hideout of ex-Minister of the Interior Siegfried Anna Meyerowitz. Various household items and a gas mask were found in the basements in Ogre.
This year, Jaunsargi (schoolchildren studying military science) and soldiers of NATO armies were involved in cleaning up Latvian garbage.
Subbotniks were regularly held in Latvia during Soviet times. Then they stopped these activities, citing the fact that using free labor is not good. In 2008, cleanup workers returned to Latvia once more – that year, cleaning the territory was designated as a gift from the residents of Latvia for its 90th anniversary.
Since then, regarding 500,000 participants have taken part in the event, and, compared to the first years of the event, the amount of waste collected has more than halved.
