In Klaipėda, there is a 10-point plan and 9.2 million to fight floods. euros

Mayor Arvydas Vaitkus and CEO of Klaipėdos vanduo Benitas Jonikas, who met in Klaipėda city municipality on Monday, presented a plan on how to fight against possible floods in the coming years.

According to A. Vaitkaus, the problem is very acute. Especially since the rise in the water level of the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon is recorded. It is calculated that it is about 7 percent per year. days when a large amount of Baltic Sea water flows into the Curonian Lagoon.

And this summer has shown that the streets and yards of Klaipėda begin to sink as soon as more rain falls.

As B. Jonikas told, there were days in the summer when, after heavy rainfall, about 7 thousand flowed into the Smiltelė stream per second. liters of water.

On August 6, one of the most problematic places in the city – Herkaus Manto Street near the viaduct – became impassable. The courtyards were sunken not only in the old town, but also in Debrecen Street, Ryšininkų Street.

The municipality will also contribute

Two years ago, the rain collection systems were handed over to the Klaipėdos vanduo company. However, it turned out that only half of them – about 180 km – is inventoried. The other part is in unknown condition. In the coming years, it is planned to inventory the remaining networks and hand them over to the Klaipėdos vanduo company.

“It appears that the rain surface systems have not been maintained for about 30 years. 46 points are in an emergency state”, said A. Vaitkus.
The company “Klaipėdos vanduo” plans to invest about 9 million in the next four years. euros. 2 million Klaipėda City Municipality intends to allocate EUR.

B.Jonikas presented the hydraulic model for the so-called 8th basin, that is, the territory of 500 hectares from Baltijos prospect to Smiltelė st. – between Šilutė highway and Taikas avenue.

During the summer floods, the street of Debrecen sank the most. In this place, it is considered to build a pumping station or to switch part of the territory to another basin. However, the latter option would be less effective.

Prepared a 10-point plan

B. Jonikas presented the prepared plan, what will be done in the city of Klaipėda to reduce the occurrence of floods.

The first is to inventory the surface sewage networks and hand them over to the Klaipėdos vanduo company. After the inventory, hydraulic models will be carried out.

It is also planned to allocate 400,000 for network reconstruction every year. euros. It turned out that there are yards where there are no surface sewage networks yet. For example, the courtyards of Vytautas Street in the city center or the section of Skerdyklos Street. Work is already underway here.

Negotiations will also be held with the municipality of Klaipėda district, because the waste water of some of the economic entities operating here flows into the city of Klaipėda.
It is also planned not only to collect rainwater, but also to clean it. And this, according to A. Vaitkaus, should be done by the entire country’s cities. “It is not only the city of Klaipėda that has to manage and clean the sewage, if we want to see a clean lagoon”, said A. Vaitkus. It is hoped that the Grigeo Klaipėda company will also invest in wastewater treatment.

Alternative energy sources will also be sought to ensure the operation of compressors in extreme conditions. Last year, a lightning strike damaged the compressor station near the Herkaus Mantos street overpass and the roadway began to sink.

After receiving questions from journalists about how the water prices for residents will change, after drawing up such plans, B.Jonikas and A.Vaitkus assured that the corrections will not be significant – 1-2 cents.
