In Klaipėda, the name of L. Giros street will be changed, the board for A. Venclovai will be removed

The Lithuanian Genocide and Resistance Research Center (LGGRTC), which made this decision, ordered these works to be carried out by December 14, following the provisions of the law prohibiting the promotion of totalitarian, authoritarian regimes and their ideologies in public spaces.

Such a recommendation was submitted to the center by the so-called de-Sovietization commission, which stated that both mentioned persons were active in the occupation political structures and participated in the promotion of the Soviet totalitarian regime.

LGGRTC obliged the municipality of Klaipėda to change the name of L. Giros street and to remove the commemorative plaque to A. Venclova.

According to Vitalijaus Juška, the head of the Heritage Protection Department of Klaipėda municipality, the decision to change the name of L. Gira street will have to be made by the city council.

“The municipality of Klaipėda intends to take proactive steps regarding the implementation of the decisions of the Genocide and Resistance Research Center of the Lithuanian population by the specified date. The decision on renaming Liuda Gira Street will have to be made by the Klaipėda City Municipal Council,” V. Juška told BNS.

According to him, since the board with the bas-relief of A. Venclova is not the property of the Klaipėda municipality, it is intended to contact the managers of the house on Vilties street 4 regarding its removal.

According to the commission’s conclusion, L. Gira collaborated with the Soviet occupation authorities, in 1940 he was appointed a representative of the People’s Seimas of Lithuania occupied by the USSR, as a member of the authorized delegation, he went to Moscow to request that Lithuania be “admitted” to the composition of the Soviet Union, he participated in the relevant parliament of the USSR in the session. In 1940-1941, he was the deputy commissar of education of the USSR, and in 1941 he fled to Russia during the Second World War.

According to the commission, A. Venclova was appointed Minister of Education of the Lithuanian SSR in June 1940 while he was abroad. In July, he was elected to the People’s Seimas, in August, as a member of the People’s Seimas Authorized Commission, he participated in the VII session of the Supreme Council of the USSR, which ratified the illegal annexation of Lithuania as “the admission of Lithuania to the composition of the USSR”.
