As political rallies swell ahead of Kenya’s presidential elections, candidates have adopted a new fashion: addressing the crowd from the roof of their car. The trend, born during the pandemic under the influence of health restrictions, seduces with its flexibility and derisory cost.
“Come off the stage. There’s a new scene in town,” announces the Kenyan daily Nation. With the approach of the presidential elections of August 2022, Kenya is seeing an increase in political rallies of a new kind. Increasingly, observes the media, politicians “use the sunroof of their cars as political podiums”. The trend, born during the pandemic under the influence of health restrictions, has gained momentum and “she refuses to go away”, as life normalizes following passing the Omicron variant.
Originally adopted to save politicians from mingling with their constituents during the pandemic, the method allows crowds to be addressed inexpensively “while reaching as many voters as possible”, notes the Kenyan newspaper. No need to rent a room, a podium or secure a place. “All you need is an SUV with a sunroof through which you can easily stand up and address the crowd, and a good sound system, usually mounted on the roof of another vehicle.”
