In Indonesia, the volcano Mount Marapi erupted and evacuated

Indonesia’s Mount Marapi volcano erupted on Sunday, sending smoke and ash into the air, but no casualties were reported.

The Marpi volcano observation post in West Sumatra province recorded an ash plume about 1,300 meters (4,265 ft) from its summit, followed by an ash shower.

Roads and vehicles were seen in nearby villages covered in ash from the volcanic eruption.

At least 100 residents have been evacuated since Indonesian authorities raised the volcano’s alert level from two to three or the second highest level.

Marapi is known for spontaneous eruptions that are difficult to predict because it does not erupt due to deep movement of magma, which does not register tremors on seismograph monitors.

Its eruption in early December sent a three-kilometer (more than 9,800 ft)-high column of ash, killing 24 climbers and injuring several others.

About 1,400 people live on the slopes of Marpi in the nearest villages, Rubai and Goba Kamantiang, about five to six kilometers (3.1 to 3.7 mi) from the summit.

Marapi has been active since the volcano erupted in January last year. There were no casualties at that time. It is one of more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’.
