The Hanoi Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that the number of dengue cases in the capital has skyrocketed due to the recent rain and windy days, causing many people to be hospitalized in critical condition.
As of August 13, Hanoi had 778 dengue fever cases, more than doubling from the same period in 2021. The circulating dengue virus strains are D1 and D2. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official said there had been no update on the number of cases in the last week, but said the increase was due to rainy weather, which allows mosquitoes to spread the disease.
According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s surveillance report for the first two weeks of August, the larvae (mosquito larvae, pathogens that cause dengue) in some regions are exceeding the standard. In addition, September and October are usually the peak times for dengue in Hanoi.
The larval index is the result of counting the total number of larvae in each water container to identify the source and range of mosquito larvae in various regions by season or stage, and BI is the number of water containers containing mosquito larvae of 100 households surveyed. A score of 30 or higher indicates an increased risk of dengue fever. There are more than 20 BIs in the northern regions. Currently, the CDC uses the caterpillar index to assess the risk in areas where a dengue outbreak may occur.
In fact, hospitals have received many severe dengue cases in recent days. In particular, the Central Research Institute for Tropical Diseases is treating nearly 30 cases of dengue, an increase from the beginning of August, of which 10 cases are severe cases. The hospital’s emergency department is treating two female patients with dengue fever, who are hospitalized in critical condition.
Dr. Man-Hung Tan, deputy director of the emergency room, said last week that four patients with severe dengue fever were reported, one of whom died and three were transferred to other departments because of the current risk.
Dr. Heung examines a patient with dengue fever who is being treated at the National Tropical Hospital on August 26.
Huungi Hospital has had regarding 20 cases of dengue fever since the beginning of the epidemic, mainly elderly patients with many underlying diseases. People admitted to the hospital often have very deep thrombocytopenia from day 5 onwards. Some people have bleeding gums and a relatively high level of platelet transfusions.
Hanoi has three epidemics: Corona 19, Dengue Fever (an increasing trend) and Influenza. According to Dr. Heung, some people subjectively prevent dengue, but they confuse these three diseases with abnormal warning signs, which delays the detection of the disease and makes it worse.
Therefore, it is recommended that people with symptoms of fever, cough, or body aches go to a medical facility and get tested. After diagnosing the cause of the fever, the patient is advised to follow the doctor’s advice and follow up at home.
