The “Open Arms” ship that started from Cyprus with regarding 200 tons of humanitarian aid arrived in Gaza and the unloading process began. According to the Cyprus News Agency (CYPE), the ship, which started its journey on Tuesday, March 12 from Larnaca, is mainly transporting food and the aid is being transported in collaboration with the NGO World Central Kitchen (WCK).
The boat was towing a barge, which was loaded with flour, rice and protein, as well as water and medicine, supplies that the civilians of the Gaza Strip desperately need as people are already dying from lack of food.
The boat ‘Open Arms’ docked at a pier on a beach in northern Gaza, which was built by the charity WCK. A second, larger ship, the ‘Jennifer’, which is also a WCK mission, is already in the port of Larnaca and was expected to leave for Gaza within the day. As the KYPE reports, its journey will begin as soon as the process of loading all the humanitarian aid, with a volume of 500 tons, on the ship is completed.
So far, not many details have been released regarding how the delivery and distribution of humanitarian aid will take place once the ship reaches Gaza. With UN aid agencies talking of huge obstacles to getting supplies to those in need. If the new sea route proves successful, the famine crisis in the Gaza Strip, where a large part of the population is facing malnutrition, might be addressed.
According to UN agencies, 85% of the population of Gaza has been displaced from their place of residence, while 60% of infrastructure of all kinds has been completely destroyed. For its part, Gaza’s health ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, says more than 31,300 dead and 73,000 wounded, of which 72% are women and children.
