A seven-fold increase in Gabon’s internal debt, from 400 billion (4.6% of GDP) to 3,000 billion CFA francs (or 22% of GDP) between 2020 and 2023. A exponential growth which might be explained in particular by the multiplication of overbilling linked to company directors in collusion with senior officials, as revealed by a first task force implemented by the authorities in 2020. The country is also ranked 136th out of 180 by Transparency International in terms of perception of corruption.
Faced with this situation, the president of the transition, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, a decided to reactivate on September 13, a task force responsible, among other things, for tracking down fraud in public procurement. The Gabon Business Federation (FEG), which plays a central role in this process, has for its part invited its members to declare their receivables for the period 2020-2022, emphasizing the need for their validation by the instances appropriate.
