The Salvadoran courts sentenced a gang member to 272 years in prison for eight murders, one case of extortion and for also finding him guilty of the crime of terrorist organizations, reported Judicial Centers on Friday, August 30.
This is Alexis Fernando Vásquez, who was tried by the Second Court against Organized Crime ‘B’ of the eastern city of San Miguel.
Along with Vásquez, Henry Ulises Guevara was also sentenced to 214 years in prison for six cases of homicide and José Elías Gómez Chávez to 147 years for four murders.
According to Judicial Centers of El Salvador, The criminal acts perpetrated by these gang members were committed between 2013 and 2016 in areas of the towns of Jucuarán and Usulutánin the east of the country.
The judicial entity added that “The victims of these crimes were extorted and murdered if they did not pay the rent.”
The investigative body did not specify whether the convicts were captured in the context of the implementation of an exceptional regime to combat gangs in a so-called “war” against these bands.
This exceptional regime is supported by a large part of the population and It has become the Government’s main and only measure against gangs. and which also earned President Nayib Bukele immediate re-election despite the constitutional prohibition.

According to official figures, since March 2022, more than 81,100 arrests have been recorded under the emergency regime, including more than 7,000 people who have been released on parole. EFE
