In Corsica, flu and Covid start to slow down and bronchiolitis recedes

The flu epidemic has slowed down in recent days in France, remaining at a high level, while, in infants, that of bronchiolitis continues but with hospitalizations still falling, summarized this Thursday, January 5 the agency of public health in its weekly report. According to these same data, last week was marked by a slowdown in the circulation of influenza and Covid viruses, but maintained at a high level.

In Corsica, the flu epidemic is particularly early this year but despite 550 consultations in the week between December 26 and January 1, the indicators of this virus were down in city medicine and in emergencies as well as hospitalizations reports Santé Publique France, in its weekly bulletin. However, the incidence rate for flu syndromes remains at 222 per 100,000 inhabitants, up from the previous week when it was 158 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The agency also warns that if the end of the year holidays generally favor the decrease in the circulation of the flu, a rebound can be observed following the start of the school year.

A drop in the number of positive Covid cases
According to the latest bulletin published this Thursday, January 5 by the Regional Health Agency of Corsica, viral circulation continues to decrease on the island. Between December 26 and January 1, 4,993 Corsican residents were newly tested by RT-PCR or antigen test and, of these, 1,021 (146 daily cases) were newly tested positive for Covid. The incidence rate stabilized at 290 cases per 100,000 people, down 28% compared to last week. “The viral circulation continues to decrease slightly. As of January 1, the active queue of conventional hospitalizations is generally stable compared to the previous Sunday, the number of patients hospitalized in intensive care/intensive care following an infection by SARS-CoV-2 remains low.” indicates the ARS in a press release.

A decrease in bronchiolitis-related hospitalizations
Concerning the third epidemic, that of bronchiolitis in Corsica, there is a slight decline. On the island, the agency noted a decrease in emergency visits (120 in one week) and hospitalizations following emergency visits among children under 2 years old for the fourth consecutive week. Despite around forty cases detected in the week between December 26 and January 1 and 5 babies currently hospitalized, the disease seems to be slowly receding.

However, due to this triple epidemic which weighs on the emergency services, the health system has been under tension for several weeks. In this context, the health authorities are once once more calling on people at risk – especially the elderly – to be vaccinated once morest influenza and Covid, while theVaccination campaigns continue to lag behind this year.
