In China, the former vice-chairman of the banking supervisor was sentenced to life in prison

This is the latest court decision in the fight once morest corruption in the financial sector of the world’s second largest economy.

Born in 1951, Cai Esheng spent most of his career in finance and served as vice chairman of the country’s banking supervisory authority for eight years.

The investigation into Cai Esheng, who is now retired, began in 2021 for “serious disciplinary and legal violations,” which usually mean corruption or embezzlement.

He was also a senior representative of the Communist Party at the banking regulator.

The conviction comes during a highly active period of crackdowns on China’s financial sector.

On Thursday, the former head of China’s central bank was sentenced to more than 16 years in prison for bribery.

An amendment to tougher penalties for corruption was passed at a meeting of lawmakers on Friday, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
