In Chad, meat remains expensive despite high production

In this country, livestock represents 30% of GDP and supports around 40% of the population, according to the 2022 report from the World Bank. According to the Ministry of Livestock, the Chadian herd currently numbers more than 140 million head of cattle, yet meat remains very expensive on the markets and most Chadians do not consume as much as they would like.

From our correspondent in Ndjamena,

Located in the heart of the market, the Atrone slaughterhouse supplies almost all of Ndjamena. It is here that Claudine Némadji, housewife, tries to negotiate the price of a kilo of beef for the day’s meal: “ I bought meat for 2500 Francs which is a lot, normally I would have had to pay 1 000 francs for the same quantity. »

If the price remains high, it is because livestock owners reserve part of the herd for export, as here at the Dourbali market, a locality located 90 km from the capital. Sitting under a tree in this market with his stick, Salim Mahamat explains how he exports his livestock: “ The herders who are here as soon as the season arrives, but for those who are in the south and who have to bring their livestock to Cameroon or Nigeria, there is the risk of encountering Boko Harram, they risk the theft of their animals or attacks. For these breeders who export their live livestock to these countries, there is also the cost of exporting. They fatten the animals on site before selling them. If there was a slaughterhouse here, there wouldn’t be all this hassle, they might do it on site. »

Creation of a slaughterhouse

The arrival of the Laham Chad company, which works in the marketing of meat, should normally also remedy other concerns in addition to the high cost of meat, explains the Minister of Livestock and Animal Production, Dr Abderahim Awat. Atteib: “ With the arrival of Laham Chad which will create the need, people will be able to work on site. Breeders will be able to fatten their livestock and instead of reserving the meat for export, they will be able to sell it within the country and the meat will certainly be cheaper. »

It is a partnership for the resumption of the Moundou slaughterhouse and the upgrade of the Farcha slaughterhouse which will help create the first quarantine zone and the first fattening farm in the country. However, some cooperatives are concerned that no environmental and social impact study has been made public for this project. “ We are behind schedule, but we are working towards this goal. », replies the minister.
