This year, Bulgaria will organize the first international student Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence, Alexander Velinov, secretary of the organizing committee of the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad, told reporters. He clarified that the competition will be held from August 9 to 15 in Burgas and that 27 teams from 20 countries have already registered.
The goal of the Olympiad is for children to understand how artificial intelligence works, Velinov explained. They will solve problems, build programs and systems, and have to train models in various areas – machine learning, natural language processing and computer vision. For the latter, Velinov explained that students will have to deal with the analysis of photographic material, after which images will be created with artificial intelligence, making sure they are ethically correct and follow specific rules.
The organizers have taken into account that children do not study artificial intelligence anywhere and will provide a free online course in advance, the expert explained. Some assignments will be given in advance to the participants so that they can prepare. The jury that will evaluate the contestants will consist of professors and experts from leading universities, including those of Oxford and Abu Dhabi, Velinov added.
The goal of the Olympiad organizers is to explain what artificial intelligence does and that people should not be afraid of it, but use it in their daily lives, Velinov added. He clarified that the ethical issues surrounding artificial intelligence will not be addressed this year, as the Olympiad is being organized for the first time, but in the future students will also deal with them.
