On the evening of Tuesday, August 27, about 100 people gathered at 14-Juillet Place in Begler to protect about 30 people threatened with deportation by the European Union in Bordeaux. “Families with children who go to school in the area may be expelled just days before the start of the school year. They have no alternative housing and could end up on the streets at any time if the police arrive. In total, about forty people are threatened. All this is to allow Buildings are vacant and there are no construction plans until 2025,” denounced Paul, who responded to the call of the “Network of Solidarity Collectives” without naming them.

The Public Development Agency (EPA), which has been working for a decade to modernize the Saint-Jean and Bersier areas between Bordeaux and Begres, regrets the practice of “illegal squatting” in its buildings.

No solution found

The Ministry of Justice confirmed the illegal occupation in April 2023 and ordered the eviction of the first building on Quai Wilson (acquired by Bordeaux Euratlantique in 2011). The government has given twelve months, plus two months, to find a resettlement solution with the Municipal Center for Social Action (CCAS). But due to a lack of available social housing, no solution has been found so far. Since July 26, the police can intervene at any time.

The same goes for the second building on Avenue Jean-Jacques-Bosc, where several people live, but no children. On June 7, the court ordered an emergency eviction notice (limited to a two-month period) because structural cracks were found in the building and endangered those living there.

“We cannot risk housing people in unsanitary or dangerous housing. We have organized associations, collectives and, where possible, people associated with the diaconate in some of the vacant buildings. But we do it anyway Less than.
