The heat we are experiencing complicates the work of farmers. They need a lot of water, especially for their breeding. Beauraing, in the province of Namur, had to take measures to restrict water consumption. But a source there makes the happiness of the stockbreeders who follow one another there.
Since June, a pump has been installed by the municipality. It provides access to the gigantic water tank. Farmers also have their own pump to draw water.
The origin of this water reservoir is quite incredible. It dates back to the 60s. Research has been carried out to create a particle accelerator. Several hundred meters underground, a tunnel was created for this project which was finally abandoned. But the tunnel remained and became a gigantic reservoir of water.
“This reservoir is precious, because in the prairies, there are springs and surface wells that dry up, so we come here to get water for the cattle in the prairies.“, explains Olivier Jaspartfarmer. “On come once or twice a day. It is necessary and it greatly relieves the well of the farm and as there are some, we take“, he adds.
The water reserve seems inexhaustible.
