In Bangladesh, popular anger against India, “accomplice of Sheikh Hasina” – Le Temps

It was to the cry of “Hang her!” that people demonstrated on August 15 in Mymensingh, a city of 500,000 inhabitants in northern Bangladesh. Anger directed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This date was long a public holiday to celebrate the anniversary of the death of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of the country’s independence. But in 2024, people in the cities and villages of Bangladesh are wishing for… the death of the girl. “We thank the government of Muhammad Yunus for having eliminated this public holiday synonymous with the crimes of his regime,” says Akkas Ali, a figure of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in Mymensingh. We now ask him to bring Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh, or she must be tried and sentenced to death!”

Since August 5, when millions of Bangladeshis took to the streets to demand her resignation, Sheikh Hasina has been a refugee in India. She fled to New Delhi before reaching a secret location, under the protection of the Indian government. She tried, without success, to reach the United States, the United Kingdom or the United Arab Emirates. It is therefore the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a long-time friend, who ensures the protection of the former Iron Lady… while anger is rising in Bangladesh. “We must put more pressure on India,” judges Akkas Ali, at the head of a procession. “It is possible, there are extradition agreements between India and Bangladesh!”
