Tensions in the Middle East are skyrocketing. The United States has warned Israel not to target Lebanon’s state infrastructure during its strikes against Hezbollah, Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 learned. The US has asked Tel Aviv not to damage the infrastructure and/or assets of the sovereign state of Lebanon under any circumstances. The US has told Israel to “distinguish as much as possible” between Hezbollah and Lebanon, the TV channel reports. US officials told their Israeli counterparts two days ago that they supported the IDF’s actions against Hezbollah, but warned that the US “red line” was that Israel should not “knowingly and deliberately” do anything that could lead to an all-out war.
Meanwhile, two Israeli officials and a Western diplomat told Axios that Hezbollah has asked its ally Iran to attack Israel as the IDF ramps up its air strikes in southern Lebanon, but Tehran has so far “expressed reservations.” The sources said the Iranians explained that “the timing is not right” because President Masoud Pezeshkian is currently in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Hezbollah has asked the Islamic Republic to attack as part of retaliation for the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran two months ago, Axios reported. “The Iranians have expressed reservations about joining the fight against Israel now and have not given a positive response,” the sources said.
