The Moroccan Royal Court announced yesterday, Tuesday, that Macron informed King Mohammed VI that he “considers that the present and future of Western Sahara fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.”
In what Rabat described as “an important and significant development in support of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara,” Macron said in his message: “For France, autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework within which this issue must be resolved. Our support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 is clear and constant.”
He added that this plan “constitutes, from now on, the only basis for reaching a political, just, sustainable, and negotiated solution, in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.”
Macron stressed “the steadfastness of the French position on this issue related to the national security of the Kingdom,” noting that his country “intends to act in harmony with this position at the national and international levels.”
The French President considered that there is “an international consensus taking shape today” regarding the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty and “its scope is expanding more and more,” adding that “France is fully playing its role in all relevant bodies,” especially through his country’s support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy.
“It is time to move forward,” Macron said in his message. “I therefore encourage all parties to come together for a political settlement, which is within reach.”
Last Thursday, Algeria expressed its deep regret and strong condemnation of the French government’s decision to recognize the autonomy plan for the Western Sahara region within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, describing this decision as “unexpected, unsuccessful and useless.”
