In AI, a “French school” is beginning to emerge

Paris, world capital of fashion, gastronomy… and artificial intelligence? This was somewhat the case this week, when Yann LeCun, the most famous Frenchman in AI, was welcomed as a rock star on Wednesday at VivaTech. The day before, having arrived the same morning from the United States, Meta’s “chief AI scientist” had first participated in the 8e anniversary of FAIR Paris, one of Facebook’s parent company’s seven AI research labs. With approximately 70 researchers and engineers, this center located a stone’s throw from the Bourse, in the premises of Meta France, is one of the largest in the group.

“FAIR Paris has had a huge impact on the entire ecosystem,” says Yann LeCun. The laboratory is above all very representative of the weight of France in research in artificial intelligence. If ChatGPT was certainly designed by the Californian start-up OpenAI, France can boast of training, each year, among the best researchers in the world in the field. So much so that a “French school of AI” is taking shape, with a relatively common approach in the way these scientists approach this technology.
