Duo of Quebec artists, Tanya Saint-Pierre and Philippe-Aubert Gauthier presented their video work this evening In a kind of waking dream – the invitation, at the STUDIOTELUS of the Grand Theater de Québec.

Presented until February 15, In a kind of waking dream – the invitation is an exploration of digital, sound and visual techniques. In an interior design aesthetic of the 70s and 80s, this is very current, particularly through the echo it gives to the climate emergency.
It was through collage that the artist Tanya Saint-Pierre began creating the work in 2019. Then, a set of artistic disciplines brought it to its final form.
Indeed, since 2022, Tanya Saint-Pierre and Philippe-Aubert Gauthier explored, among other things, for this creation, computer animation, the composition of a soundtrack and digital arts.
From paper to digital
Today, the duo’s work was presented to the public, within the STUDIOTELUS, where it will live, continuously, over the months to come. In the presence of the public, Ariane Plante, curator of digital visual arts at the Grand Théâtre de Québec, spoke with the artists.
Ariane Plante: If we ask you to present your work, what do you want to tell us regarding it? What is the purpose of your work?
Tanya Saint-Pierre : It’s a video, a synthetic animation, on the theater of the domestication of nature in homes.
How did this work, at the meeting of collages and 3D animation, come regarding?
Tanya Saint-Pierre: The project began with the desire to translate handmade collage work into 3D modeling. Not just putting collages in 3D environments, but using collage as a method to create environments.

How did you work on the soundtrack?
Philippe-Aubert Gauthier: We decided to do the entire video without sound. Then, in the last month, we analyzed the colors of the video, the light intensity, to automatically control a series of synthesizers. This allows us to have a soundtrack that precisely follows the micro-variations of colors.
Furthermore, we made aesthetic choices in terms of the style of the instruments. We wanted to go get something doom jazz, a little apocalyptic, but at the same time honeyed and sweet, which echoed the spaces that we see [dans l’œuvre].
What did you use to create your collages?
Tanya Saint-Pierre: The context of the Grand Théâtre and the notion of decor inspired the choice of the series; it was made from interior design magazines from the 70s and 80s.

In the video, you can tell the house is on fire. What is your relationship to the burning ecological news?
Philippe-Aubert Gauthier: We started working before the intense episode of this summer, the fires in Quebec and Canada. Obviously, everyone already knew regarding the climate crisis but it seems like this year was special. For our part, it happened while we were creating the work so it also modulated us.
We don’t have a moralizing position regarding this, it’s more to touch on the strange fascination, this ambient ambiguity, that we can have in watching something burn while being faced with a threat.
In a kind of waking dream – the invitation, by Tanya Saint-Pierre and Philippe-Aubert Gauthier, is presented at the STUDIOTELUS at the Grand Theater de Québec from October 18, 2023 to February 15, 2024.
It is accessible for free tours, every Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. for everyone, and during shows for ticket holders. Ideally, we advise you to go and contemplate the work following dark, in order to appreciate the video projection to its full potential.
