In 2023, e-commerce has a perspective of consolidation

It is already a consensus that e-commerce has been consolidated in the last three years and was triggered by the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic. The phenomenon that was already programmed due to the advancement of digital sales tools together with a logistics operation that might handle the demand, caused digital sales in 2021 to increase by 27% compared to the previous year, earning BRL 161 billion according to a survey by Neotrust. This horizon remained a perspective for traders in general and 2022 was challenging.

Last year, there was a 23% drop in total compared to 2021 according to consultancy Nielsen IQ Ebit. Even so, 45% of shopkeepers were satisfied and indicated that sales were within expectations. However, as e-commerce is an already consolidated condition of the market, considerable growth is expected for the coming years. Research released by “NuvemCommerce 2023: annual report and e-commerce trends” shows that growth of 20% is expected per year until 2025.

For the year 2023, it is expected that the momentum that boosted e-commerce at the beginning of the pandemic will resume, consolidating itself even more in the daily life of the consumer, through mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, for example. The means of payment must also be more adapted, incorporating, in addition to traditional technologies such as the credit card, the PIX, for example, a means of payment already used by a large part of the population. Artificial Intelligence (AI) should also be explored and improved to facilitate the consumer’s purchase path.

Guilherme Tavares, CEO of Effect E-Commerce, a company specialized in accelerating e-commerce and Business Intelligence, points out that not only for 2023, but for 2024 and subsequent years, the projection is for growth in Brazilian e-commerce. “Online retail continues with a growth trend, even following the easing of restrictions due to the pandemic and the gradual resumption of physical commerce”, says the CEO.

Guilherme also points out that some consolidations are expected for the current year, such as: integration of different sales and communication channels in order to make the shopping journey more personalized and checkout without login as a way to optimize the customers’ shopping experience.

In addition, a strong retail trend is instant payment methods, such as PIX. The CEO of Effect E-Commerce says that international companies, such as Shopee, have an impact on Brazilian consumption habits and this also helps to consolidate online commerce.
