Pakistan’s anti-graft agency has summoned former prime minister Imran Khan to appear before it on Thursday, days following its efforts to arrest him were thwarted.

The National Audit Bureau sent a summons notice to the leader of the “Insaf Movement” party yesterday evening, asking him to cooperate with the investigation regarding the case of illegal gain related to the purchase of a piece of land, according to what was confirmed by a spokesman for the Bureau. Imran Khan was asked to provide certain documents and answer questions regarding the allegations.

The Supreme Court ordered Imran Khan’s release last week, describing the nature of his arrest as illegal and the Islamabad High Court later released him on bail.

The day before yesterday, Imran Khan appeared before the judiciary once more, at a time when hundreds of pro-government demonstrators demanded the resignation of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court because of his release of Imran Khan following his arrest.

The detention of the former prime minister sparked violent confrontations in several cities between his supporters and the security forces, which led to the death of 9 demonstrators and the arrest of thousands.

Imran Khan appeared before a court in Lahore (east) to respond to other accusations leveled once morest him of planning acts of violence that followed his arrest.

His lawyers confirmed that they are seeking information regarding new cases linking Imran Khan to the confrontations that erupted following his arrest.

In a speech, Imran Khan distanced himself from the vandalism of military facilities, denying that members of his party were involved in it, calling for an independent investigation into the violence.

The former cricket star – who later became involved in politics and enjoys great popularity – says that he is being subjected to judicial harassment, prompted by the government and the army, to prevent his return to power.

Imran Khan won the 2018 election on promises to fight corruption, and voters tired of decades of rule by traditional family-led parties voted for him.

Independent analysts say that Imran Khan came to power with the support of the army before disputes broke out between him and the generals.

Pakistan’s “strong” military has ruled directly throughout nearly half of the country’s 75-year history and continues to exert influence over the political system.
