Last year, there were 108 accidents on motorway worksites in Wallonia, twice as many as in Flanders. Benoit Godart, spokesperson for VIAS, explains these differences to us this Wednesday at noon.
The motorway network is longer in Flanders than in Wallonia and yet there are more accidents on the construction sites listed in Wallonia. “It is obvious that these figures are not normal”notes Benoît Godart, spokesperson for VIAS In all, last year, 108 were counted. “There is clearly a problem with respecting speed limits in work zones in Wallonia, because in general we do not control the speed where a lidar is placed at the start of the work. Drivers know that following this lidar , the risk of being checked is almost nil. A lidar is a system allowing distance thanks to a light beam sent to a transmitter. This system is close to a laser system. “However, if we go to the sea, we know that in Ghent, the section radar over several kilometers forces drivers to slow down or respect the correct speed over several kilometres”continues Benoît Godart. “This is undeniably the direction we should go in Wallonia because we know that accidents in work zones are more linked to excessive speeds.”
Also, the longer the work zones, the more motorists will be tempted by speed, especially if they notice other users overtaking them. “We are working a lot on the acceptability of speed limits at VIAS”analyse-t-on chez VIAS. “In terms of road safety, it would be better to have smaller sections that require more compliance with speed limits.”
As construction sites approach, 63% of Belgians indicate that they are not slowing down. The European average is around 50%. The Belgians are therefore very poor students on the issue… To remedy this, VIAS is therefore calling for more section radars in Wallonia.
