“Improving Schizophrenia and Catatonia with a Groundbreaking Lupus Treatment: The Story of April Burrell”.

2023-06-04 13:30:00

After such a long time, it is generally thought that things will no longer evolve… And yet, following spending 20 years in psychiatry, April Burrell saw such a significant improvement in her condition that she managed to leave the hospital and readjust to normal life.

Schizophrenia and catatonia, two psychiatric disorders

The story, told by the Washington Post, begins when April Burrell was 21 years old. While the patient is still a student, she is diagnosed as schizophrenic, with a severe form. At the same time, she also suffers from catatonia, defined by the High Authority for Health (HAS) as a complex psychomotor syndrome that combines behavioral, motor and neurovegetative signs.

Symptoms of catatonia include stupor (lack of psychomotor activity, no interaction with the environment), agitation (unrelated to external stimuli), mutism (lack or near absence of verbal response), negativism (opposition or lack of response to instructions or stimuli), etc.

Lupus treatment improves his psychiatric disorders

For April Burrell, the main symptoms are above all the inability to communicate, to take care of herself, to have distant memories, to recognize members of her family.

Because of her two psychiatric disorders, the young woman was quickly interned in psychiatry and remained there for 20 years… Until 2018, when Sander Markx, an American psychiatrist, is studying his case. For him, the symptoms she suffers from might also be those of lupus, a disease chronic autoimmune.

After confirmation of the diagnosis, she began treatment for lupus. In just six months, this treatment markedly improved his cognitive state. Thus, she regains her memories and recognizes the members of her family. In 2020, she leaves the hospital and is integrated into a rehabilitation center.

This case shows that some patients believed to have schizophrenia may actually suffer from another pathology, here lupus. Thus, treating this disease might improve their general condition.
