Improving Safety and Cleanliness in Stations: Challenges and Concerns from Police Unions

Last week, under the coordination of the National Crisis Center (NCCN), the federal, regional and municipal public authorities agreed with the SNCB on an action plan to improve safety and cleanliness in the station. Noon. The reception, however, is mixed from the police unions.

If Vincent Houssin, vice-president of the VSOA/SLFP-Police union welcomes the initiative of the Minister of the Interior Annelies Verlinden (CD&V) and the development of this plan, he is rather skeptical regarding its implementation. “The police are underfunded and problems have been neglected for years“, he says, pointing out the poor working conditions of the agents.

Like his SNPS counterpart, Carlo Medo, Mr. Houssin is concerned regarding the impact of the measures on crime in Brussels. “By cleaning up Brussels-South, we risk moving the problem elsewhere“, he declares. “There are other problematic stations in Belgium. We have been hearing for years that the situation in Brussels North is unbearable. Just last year, a colleague was stabbed to death there, but that didn’t change much“. “We need more resources, infrastructure and staff“, insists the trade unionist. “The large stations do not have a police station within them, it is scandalous, and the staff deficit amounts to at least 2,500 people. Recruitment objectives are (definitely) not achieved“.
