“I came from Ponce to receive this treatment, at that time, the doctor told me that all the lacerations had to be removed or reduced with creams, so I didn’t have to sit down in the followingnoon to remove everything on my head, literally being full of blood,” Cordero said.
Initial treatments were not effective
At that time, trying to remove the lesions caused by the psoriasis it was what was recommended as a way to deal with this condition. However, this type of treatment did not give good results for Silvia, which led her to have to return to Ponce.
“There little by little we were bringing out different types of drugs, which in some cases were effective, others not, but controlled the condition,” he added.
He has gone through several crises of the disease
Cordero recalled that when he entered the university at the Mayagüez University Center, his psoriasis it flared up to a catastrophic level, making it impossible for her to carry out many of the activities she used to do, prompting her to receive new treatment.
“We had to channel it with the help of colotherapy and many topical medications and we began to feel what it really was to work on the situation to control the psoriasis and accept it, so much so that I began to be a carrier when I see patients who are self-conscious, I am the one who tells them, ‘it does not limit you, you control it,’ she said.
Silvia expresses that she is aware that facing the psoriasis It is like experiencing a seesaw of emotions, since there are moments in which it becomes difficult to bear. In his experience, he believes that it is essential to have education and empathy, both from health professionals and from society in general, in order to better face the challenges that this condition entails.
“Before the psoriasis they saw it as updated leprosy, or thought that it is contagious. Looks spoke louder than words, on many occasions. Patients need to know that they are not alone in this process,” she concluded.
