“Outcome of children with congenital heart defects admitted to the pediatric department of CHUD-B/A from 2011 to 2022”. This is the title of the thesis subject defended by Ahmad Ibrahim. The exercise accomplished with mastery, the vote of the established critics that constitutes the jury awards it the very honorable mention.
At the age of 23, Ahmad Ibrahim defended his doctoral thesis in medicine on October 26, 2023 at the University of Parakou with very honorable mention. His research focuses on the theme “Become of children with congenital heart defects admitted to the pediatric department of CHUD-B/A from 2011 to 2022”. Congenital heart defects are in fact malformations of the heart with which children are born. These diseases affect the hearts of children before they are born. A real public health problem due to their incidence and mortality, Doctor Ahmed Ibrahim now wanted to take an interest in this problem to finally offer his therapy. The disciple of Professor Léopold Codjo presented his work before a jury composed of Professor Christiane Koudoukpo and Associate Lecturers, Albert Comlan Dovonou and Séraphin Ahoui. The jury is chaired by Professor Julien Didier Adedemy.
From the results of his research and his suggestions
From his research, three out of a thousand children admitted to the pediatric department of CHUD-B/A had congenital heart disease. Only one in 4 children had benefited from surgical or interventional treatment. One in 3 children died from this disease, and less than one in two children reached the age of 10. The risk factors for death were: cyanogenic heart disease, lack of restorative treatment, and cessation of medical follow-up.
This is why he believes that improving diagnosis, local correction of heart disease and medical monitoring will improve the prognosis of congenital heart disease in Parakou.
Ahmad Ibrahim also suggests detecting these children early (hence the interest in systematic screening for heart disease by saturated monitoring at birth and early consultation from the first manifestations, which are respiratory difficulties and stunted growth), respect the follow-up appointments of these children and operate locally on these children, hence the usefulness of creating a pediatric cardiovascular surgery and interventional catheterization unit in Benin because most of these malformations, i.e. 86% in his research work, require surgery.
