In light of the suffocating economic crisis that Lebanon is witnessing, its repercussions were not limited to citizens in their homes and jobs, but rather extended frighteningly to Lebanese prisons, as these prisons suffer today from difficult and deteriorating conditions. Among the new challenges that have emerged, some doctors have stopped visiting prisons due to difficult financial conditions and the deterioration of the local currency.

In this context, the head of the sub-committee of the joint parliamentary committees, Representative Michel Moussa, confirmed that “there is a real problem related to the number of doctors who visit prisons, due to non-payment of their due salaries and bonuses.”

In an interview with the “Lebanese Debate”, Moussa indicated, “Efforts are currently being made to strengthen the presence of doctors in prisons, and the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Interior must intervene to ensure the provision of the necessary facilities for doctors, because prison doctors work under the supervision of the Ministry of Interior.”

Moussa revealed his “contact with Interior Minister Bassam Al-Mawlawi and Finance Minister Youssef Al-Khalil to increase the budget allocated to prisons, to solve the problem of lack of resources, because we fall into a problem every time,” recalling the problem of food vendors in prisons who threatened to strike as a result of not receiving their dues, and the concerned ministers were contacted. , where a treasury advance was approved for them over 6 months.”

He added, “In medicine, there is also a shortage in the budget, and an advance was also approved as a result of the contacts that we made, so what is required today at the gates of the budget is that we take note of these issues so that we do not fall once more into a problem with the issue of food and medicine.”

Moussa considered, “The situation is currently under control, but the most important thing at the present time is to increase the number of medical visits to prisons, in cooperation between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Interior, and to solve the financial problems faced by the concerned doctors.”

These developments come in light of the exacerbation of the Lebanese economic crisis, as the country is exposed to a continuous deterioration in the monetary value of the local currency and high inflation, which makes it more difficult to provide basic services, including health care and care for prisoners in the country.
