Abandoned by the State to the detriment of TGVs, Intercity trains are losing speed in France and are experiencing daily delays.
Train delays represent the worst nightmare for SNCF travelers and among the trains which are not on time, the Intercités are legion. In fact, Intercity trains experience more delays than TGVs.
But which lines have the most delays? Between January and August 2023 (excluding night trains), here are the five least punctual Intercity train lines, revealed by The Parisian.
Bordeaux-Marseille: 26.6% of trains late on arrival Lyon-Nantes: 21% of trains late on arrival Paris-Clermont-Ferrand: 15.3% of trains late on arrival Hendaye- Toulouse: 14% of trains late on arrival Bordeaux-Nantes: 13.4% of trains late on arrival
“The longer the journey, the greater the probability of having an incident”
“The longer the journey, the greater the probability of having an incident due to an external cause. We must also share the track with the TER or freight trains,” explains to Parisian the director of Intercités at SNCF.
And following having invested for a long time in TGVs, the State now wants to allow the Intercités to get a makeover. Thus, more than 4 billion euros have been released since 2018 for the purchase of equipment and the renovation of lines.
The State and the SNCF promise new trains for the Intercités. Called Oxygen, they are expected for 2026.
