Improving Concentration and Emotional Control in ADHD Children through Neurocognitive Training: A Study by the Education University of Hong Kong

A study by the Education University of Hong Kong found that children with “Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder” (ADHD) can improve their concentration and emotional control through training similar to computer games. The research team, supported by BrainX Brain Training Center, invited 24 primary three to six students with ADHD to conduct a 20-week study from September last year to February this year. During this period, schoolchildren need to go to the training center twice a week for 1-hour brain wave technology training on “neurocognitive technology”.

“Neurocognitive technology” is conducted in a similar way to computer games, guiding students to complete various tasks to train their abilities of concentration endurance, eye tracking, time management, short-term memory, ignoring distractions and listening to instructions. During the training, students need to wear a hand strap to measure their concentration in real time. The details of the training are as follows:

Concentration Endurance: It is a practice of “visualization” concentration. The research team evaluated the students before and following the training. The items included concentration, timely response, ability to suppress impulses, and performance of suppressing overreaction. The results showed that following the training, the performance scores of the students increased in all behaviors, and the increase in timely response was the most obvious.

The research team also invited parents to fill out questionnaires to evaluate their children, scoring their concentration, executive function, hyperactivity and impulsiveness, and emotions, and comparing their responses following receiving “neurocognitive technology” training. The lower the score, the better the behavior, and it was found that the children’s performance improved in all aspects.

The Center for Special Learning Needs and Inclusive Education of EdUHK shared its research results today (21st).
