The Kaliningrad region lacks container ships and ferries for wagons and trucks. This was announced at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum by the head of the Kaliningrad region Anton Alikhanov, the press service of the regional government reported on Thursday, June 15.

The governor stressed that now 40% of cargo is delivered to the region by sea. In order to neutralize the pressure of the EU and Lithuania on the region, it is necessary to increase the number of ships carrying goods along the Kaliningrad-St. Petersburg route.

“We had a huge trucking market. There are specifics in the field of transportation: we are very weakly containerized, a very large proportion of transportation is ro-ro, that is, by rolling equipment. Therefore, we, of course, need new ferries,” Alikhanov believes.

While new dry cargo ships are being built, they should be replaced by ships from other regions of Russia.
