The number of screenings is still very insufficient in France. According to a study by Public Health France, only a third of French people are screened for colorectal cancer. And one in two women over the age of 50 is screened for breast cancer. So near Narbonne, a bus goes to meet the patients.

It is a traveling practice parked on the village square of Olonzac (Hérault) for a mammogram close to home, free, and without an appointment. “Cis important given the number of cancers detected each year”, underlines a local resident. Cancers, detected earlier, have lighter and more effective treatments. Every two years, women aged 50 to 74 are invited to organized screening. But in France, the participation rate has been declining for a few years. Today it is only 50%. “Women, like men, are always afraid to go for exams”explains Dr. Joseph Pujol, doctor emeritus teacher-researcher.

Less than 35% colorectal cancer screenings

Simpler still, screening for colorectal cancer is to do it yourself, at home. However, participation is even lower with less than 35% of screenings. From the age of 50, men and women receive a letter inviting them to do this screening. “We are all concerned following the age of fifty. The purpose of the test is to detect cancer before it gives symptoms. It is in this case that it can be cured nine times out of ten”analysis Pr Cindy Neuzillet, gastroenterologist.
