Barely 20% of babies are fully breastfed in Botswana, Health Minister Edwin Dikoloti has said, while calling on local communities to step up their support for breastfeeding.

The minister made the remarks on Tuesday during the launch of World Breastfeeding Week in the village of Tutume, 550 km northeast of Gaborone, the capital of Botswana.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that babies be breastfed for at least two years, with the introduction of complementary foods from six months of age.

This means that a baby under six months should only receive breast milk, unless medically contraindicated, Dikoloti said. Many medical studies have shown that prolonged breastfeeding improves the health of young children during their growth.

The Minister announced the implementation of ten measures aimed at creating an environment conducive to breastfeeding and reducing barriers to the promotion of breastfeeding.

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year during the first week of August. It aims to raise public awareness of the importance of breastfeeding.
