“Animal welfare is forgotten”
For Valérie Ladade, veterinarian in Auderghem, this case, like others, illustrates a lack of consultation and consideration of animal welfare.
“We did not consult the experts. Whether veterinarians, behaviourists, animal welfare councils or aldermen. There is a general tendency at Bruxelles Environnement to repeatedly reduce the free spaces for dogs in parks. However, they need space to spend themselves. If they are too confined, their agressivity risk of increasing. In addition, if they have to stay in the lawns, the risk is higher, especially in bad weather, that they will catch diseases. These decisions go once morest animal welfare, it’s totally inconsistent“.
“I’m a little tired of stigmatizing dogs. If a cyclist knocks down a pedestrian, we’re not going to get rid of the bikes. It’s often 2 weights, 2 measures. The project must be realistic, otherwise it won’t be not followed and it will be worse, for everyone. Why is Brussels not inspired by Wallonia by deciding instead to introduce a compulsory detention permit to keep an animal?
For information, there are more than 100,000 dogs in the Brussels region.
