I-70 is now open downtown in both directions

While the I-65 portion of the north split may not be ready until late spring, I-70 is open in both directions, meaning less congestion on I-465.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will fix up more than a dozen downtown Indianapolis streets that saw wear and tear while the I-65/70 North Split interchange was closed for two years.

Work on the first segment on 11th street begins Monday and will require road closures for up to two months.

The $350 million project to rebuild the downtown interchange began in May 2021 and reopened in late April, regarding six months beyond what INDOT originally anticipated due to supply chain and workforce issues.

During the prolonged closure truck and vehicle traffic diverted onto city streets, adding stress to the local network. So shortly following the interstate opened INDOT announced it would invest $14 million to repair street segments around the project, replacing pavement and curbs. The agency worked with the city Department of Public Works to identify which ones need help.

The plan is to work on them this fall and during the 2024 construction season, beginning Monday with 11th Street between Meridian and Delaware streets.

Crews will start setting up Monday, and these road and lane closures will begin as soon as Wednesday:

11th Street between Meridian and Pennsylvania streets: The two left lanes will close. The two right lanes will be open to traffic and become dedicated right-turn lanes at the intersection with Pennsylvania.11th Street between Pennsylvania and Delaware: This section will be fully closed.Pennsylvania between 12th and 11th streets: The two left lanes will be closed with two lanes open to southbound traffic.

Here’s how to get around it:

Regular vehicles will detour south on Pennsylvania Street, east on 10th Street and north on Delaware Street.Trucks will detour south on Meridian Street, east on 10th Street and north on Delaware Street.Pedestrians will detour north on Pennsylvania Street, east on 12th Street and south on Delaware Street.

These are the other road segments INDOT will repair this fall and next year:
