You can’t sleep, you pace in your head and you don’t know why? According to sleep expert Katherine Hall, whose comments were relayed by the Mirror, this fleeting insomnia might well be due to the snack you ate just before bed. As she explained, certain foods should be avoided before joining the arms of Morpheus in order to improve sleep. But there is one particularly harmful one. These are the salty foods like crisps or peanuts, usually tempting at a Netflix party.
If you can’t fall asleep or have trouble staying asleep, then salt might be the problem. Specifically, meals high in sodium cause water retention and increased blood pressure, making it difficult for the body to shut down completely. “This then results in what is called shallow sleep, where the sleep is not very deep and can often involve disturbances like going to the bathroom more often,” she explained.

Eat a banana instead
Instead, Katherine Hall recommends eating a banana before bed. A snack that most people wouldn’t associate with sleep but rather with getting up. However, according to her, it would combat anxiety and stress. Its consumption would promote well-being, sleepiness and improve the quality of sleep.
“Bananas contain both tryptophan, an amino acid that promotes melatonin, and magnesium. Both promote relaxation and sleep, so put the chips aside and eat a banana before bed.”she insisted.
Note that theOMS recommends that adults consume no more than 5 g of salt per day. For children, the recommendation is even lower, 2 g. However, most people consume too much, between 9 and 12 grams per day on average, twice the maximum recommended intake. This contributes to high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
