Eat eggs, bacon, and cheese instead of oatmeal, toast, and fruit: Changing what you eat at breakfast can be a simple way to improve glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes, researchers report in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. .

Switching from a high-carb breakfast to more protein and fat can help people with type 2 diabetes better manage blood sugar. Body weight, BMI or waist circumference had not changed after twelve weeks as a result of the change in diet, but there was a reduction in blood sugar levels in the participants, so that some of them needed less diabetes medication.

The fluctuations in blood sugar levels over the course of the day were significantly lower with a low-carbohydrate breakfast. This suggests that it may stabilize blood sugar levels throughout the day. A high-fat and high-protein breakfast may also influence eating behavior later in the day: study participants who ate a low-carb breakfast consumed fewer calories and carbohydrates for the rest of the day.

While low-carb diets are trending, like all diets, they’re difficult to stick to over the long term. dr Barbara Oliveira of the University of British Columbia said: “We’re not talking about a complete diet change. By making a small adjustment to the carb content of a single meal rather than the entire diet, we can make compliance significantly easier while also realizing significant benefits.”

The 12-week study involved 121 people who were split into two groups and given a variety of breakfast options, each containing around 450 calories. One group ate a low-carb breakfast containing about 8 grams of carbohydrate, 25 grams of protein, and 37 grams of fat. The other took in about 56g of carbohydrates, 20g of protein and 15g of fat in the morning. All of them had their blood sugar levels continuously measured and the long-term blood sugar level HbA1c determined after 12 weeks.
