Impressive demo of PSSR scaling in The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PlayStation 5 Pro

The Last of Us Part II Remastered is a great indicator of what the PlayStation 5 Pro and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution AI-powered upscaling are capable of, according to new preliminary analysis.

New analysis from Digital Foundry, based on preliminary footage, confirms that Naughty Dog’s remaster of the second installment in the series is aiming for 4K resolution, 60 FPS on the upcoming console, using PSSR to upscale to 4K resolution from 1440p. This provides a significant visual leap over the base model’s performance mode, as the upscaler improves texture detail and reduces blur and anti-aliasing, especially in fine textures such as foliage. On PlayStation 5 Pro, the game also shows noticeable improvements in geometric edges. Additionally, performance is extremely stable as the game runs at a constant 60 FPS except for a few scenarios.

The use of PSSR in The Last of Us Part II Remastered also allowed Digital Foundry to highlight how the upscaler provides better image stability than the more widely used AMD FSR. Since the game isn’t out on PC yet, a direct comparison isn’t possible, but when using its predecessor, it’s still clear how the upscaler lags behind NVIDIA DLSS in some respects, such as fine edge detail.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered hardly needed the improvements that other games like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth did, but it’s still nice to hear that even games that look and run great on the base model can take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s capabilities Pro to offer an even better experience. So the remaster will be an even better way to enjoy this game.
