The Ministry of Industry emphasized that the implementation of SNI 8880:2020 must be applied to gold commodities. This is absolute because consumers who want to buy gold cannot directly know the carat content of gold visually.
Thus, a gold product testing process is required in an accredited laboratory according to the standards contained in SNI 8880:2020 Gold Goods.
“By including the SNI logo on gold products, consumers will be greatly helped. For the industry, this step will strengthen competitiveness because it increases the value of the gold product itself,” said the Head of the Industrial Services Standardization and Policy Agency (BSKJI) of the Ministry of Industry, Andi Rizaldi, in a written statement, Tuesday (20/8).
He added, with the implementation of the gold standard, the utilization of the jewelry industry sector will continue to be encouraged to contribute to the national economy. It can also be a means of technical barrier for imported products that do not meet standards.
Therefore, through the work unit under the BSKJI of the Ministry of Industry, namely the Yogyakarta Center for Standardization and Service of the Craft and Batik Industry (BBSPJIKB) has issued a Certificate of Product Use of the Indonesian National Standard Mark (SPPT SNI) for Gold Products in accordance with SNI 8880:2020 to 24 gold industry companies in Indonesia.
The quality requirements of gold products as regulated in SNI 8880:2020 consist of various types, ranging from 8 carats to 24 carats and even pure gold carats. The meaning of gold carat itself is a system created to measure the level of purity of gold products based on the percentage of pure gold contained in a gold product.

Head of BBSPJIKB, Budi Setiawan explained that gold with a carat amount of 8 means the product contains 33.33-37.49% gold, while if the amount of carat is 24 in a product then the gold content is 99.90-99.98%.
“For pure gold, the gold content must be at 99.99% or above,” he added.
The implementation of the gold SNI (SNI 8880:2020) which has been in effect since July 17, 2020 is still voluntary, but the Ministry of Industry continues to encourage gold industry companies to be able to implement product standards according to SNI 8880:2020.

“The process to obtain SPPT SNI gold is actually quite easy. Access to obtain gold product certification services can be through, he explained.
Later, Budi continued, the company will receive certification services from the BBSPJIKB Product Certification Institute (LSPro BBSPJIKB). LSPro BBSPJIKB is a certification body that has consistently implemented SNI ISO / IEC 17065: 2012, has been accredited with the LSPR-025-IDN Number to carry out product certification, one of which is in the Sub Category of products: Non-Ferrous Metals (Silver / Gold) (17.04).
The requirements that must be met are that the company uploads application documents, brand certificates/brand registrations, licensing documents such as NIB, NPWP, production process diagrams, lists of equipment and product quality control, and company quality documents.
This product certification uses a Type 3 or 5 scheme that includes selection, determination that includes product testing, field evaluation related to the production line, management system audit (specifically type 5), review and determination of certification decisions. This scheme is followed by surveillance, namely a method of testing and re-evaluating the field related to the production line of the certification applicant.
“The validity period of the SNI SPPT is four years with two surveillance processes,” concluded Budi. (Z-11)
