CHLEF – Participants in a national conference on “Aquaculture in Algeria, investment opportunities and challenges”, organized Monday at the University of Chlef, affirmed the imperative to invest in the aquaculture sector, in view of its role in increasing fishery production and its contribution to the diversification and revival of numerous economic activities.

The speakers at this meeting, which included researchers, teachers and professionals from the aquaculture sector from five wilayas of the country, highlighted the capacities and resources abounding on the national coast, as well as the facilitations provided by the sector, likely to encourage and attract investors in aquaculture.

This is particularly the case of Rachid Annan, researcher and expert at the National Center for Research and Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture, who estimated that the aquaculture sector “is experiencing rapid growth and provides multiple investment opportunities “, requiring the orientation of investments towards this sector, particularly in terms of inputs to the fishing sector, including fry, feed, fattening farms, as well as the food and processing industries.

“In addition to its role in increasing fish production, the aquaculture sector serves as a locomotive for the national economy, given the number of activities related to the sector that can be generated through local investments, as is the case for the wilaya of Chlef, which is a pioneer in this area,” he said.

For her part, Ms. Fatima Boudia, president of the conference, underlined the “considerable importance” now assigned to aquaculture because of “its contribution to the consecration of food security and to the national economy, through blue economy, focused on all activities linked to the fishing sector.

She also assured that the diversification of the aquaculture sector, including marine, continental aquaculture and fish farming integrated into agriculture, is “dependent on the orientation of more local investments towards this activity, so as to ensure real exploitation of the domain’s capacities and resources.

“The Chlef aquaculture sector contributes a significant part to national fish production,” underlined the director of fishing and aquaculture of the wilaya, Hocine Melikeche, estimating that the investment in the sector’s inputs is likely to reduce production costs and prices and to open up new perspectives.

The meeting was marked by the presentation of several successful experiences in the field of marine and freshwater aquaculture, in addition to the facilitation of face-to-face and videoconference communications.

The event will be crowned by a series of recommendations which will be submitted to the competent authorities with a view to promoting this sector and attracting more investments, and therefore contributing to the establishment of local food security and the diversification of non-hydrocarbon exports, in the future.
