View of Imola

Mercedes urgently need to move forward once more in Imola. A large update package should help with this. We are all very excited to see what Toto Wolff and his engineers will come up with.

Our editor-in-chief Christian Nimmervoll spoke to Sky and Formel1.de expert Ralf Schumacher on the complex topic of Mercedes. One thing is clear, Mercedes’ performance so far this season is unacceptable and the question remains whether the update package really represents the desired step forward.

You can get a little more detailed explanation directly from Christian and Ralf in the latest video on our YouTube-Kanal.

Imola update: game changer for Mercedes?

Regent in Imola

In the past two years it has also rained at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. Not like now, but there were still some crazy actions on Sunday due to the rain.

In 2021 there was the first small skirmish between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton at the start, when Verstappen pushed the Briton out quite roughly at the first chicane. Hamilton ended up second behind the Dutchman. We also remember the crash between George Russell (then still in the Williams) and Valtteri Bottas (then in the Mercedes).

In 2022, Carlos Sainz had to give up in the aforementioned first chicane following Daniel Ricciardo in the McLaren had steered him roughly into the gravel. A bitter pill for the Spaniard, but for Ferrari in general, because Charles Leclerc was only sixth behind Bottas in the Alfa Romeo because he had thrown away the Ferrari in the Alta variant while in third place. Max Verstappen was the winner once more, this time ahead of Sergio Perez.

Funfold: both times Lando Norris was third. He probably won’t be able to do that this year. Although if it rains once more on Sunday? But then hopefully less than in these days with the announced heavy rains.

look back

Unfortunately, at the beginning of May there was already heavy rain and flooding in the region around Imola.

At that time, Scuderia AlphaTauri also issued a message via social media that Faenza, where their factory is located, was also affected by the floods. Unfortunately, AlphaTauri employees also suffered.

To give you an impression of what it looked like in the region at the beginning of the month, I am sharing a tweet from Steffen Dietz once more. We can only hope that the region will get through the next two days well and that everything will be a lot less bad than feared.

Severe weather conditions

Unfortunately, we are getting some scary weather reports from the region around Imola.

Unfortunately, in recent weeks there has already been heavy rainfall with some severe damage from flooding in the region. It has rained far too much and far too heavily in recent weeks. The infrastructure has reached its limits.

Heavy rains are once more expected in Imola, Bologna and Co. for the next two days. The regional weather service has issued the highest warning level, no longer just for heavy rain, but also for landslides and the flooding of small streams and rivers.

Of course we will keep you up to date on this and refer to Steffen Dietzwho worked as a Formula 1 meteorologist for many years and provides information regarding the weather at the race location around the Formula 1 weekends on his Twitter channel.
