(Bloomberg) — The United States saw a 31% decline in legal immigration in 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic swept through the country, according to data of the Department of Homeland Security. The number of immigrants — regarding 707,000 — fell below the 1 million mark for the first time since 2013. It was also the lowest level since 2003, when legal immigration plummeted following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The Covid-19 crisis accelerated the declines that began under the administration of former President Donald Trump. The lack of immigrants has become a contributing factor to the current labor shortage, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said recently.
