The job market in Germany is in great shape: despite a slowdown in growth in 2023, there have never been so many workers across the Rhine. One of the reasons: immigration.

This is the ideal scenario described for years to try to counter a declining demographics: the German labor market benefited last year from a foreign workforce which boosted jobs. Nearly 46 million people had a job last year in Germany, 330,000 more than the previous year. This is a record since reunification more than thirty years ago.

Furthermore, the statistics institute also notes “ greater participation of the German population in the labor market », which is confirmed by an increase in professional activity among women and the elderly.

Unsurprisingly, the first economic sector to have generated additional jobs is the service sector, in health and education in particular, but also in commerce and gastronomy.

However, we cannot conclude that Germany has won its demographic bet, on the contrary: the labor shortage should be painfully felt from 2025, when those we call “the boomers” will begin to to retire.
